Skills and experience gained
Lucy Blundell, Graphic Artist, Chillingo. Animation BA (Hons) graduate 2009. "My experience of the BA Animation course was great. I got to learn new, useful software which has aided me in my profession today. I learnt some new skills such as observing the way characters move and express emotion, understanding the production process from script to screen, and time-management. I like how every aspect of animation was covered as it gave me a better understanding of how it all comes together and which area I wanted to work in. Although I enjoyed animating, the course showed me that what I was really passionate about was the concept art, storyboarding and 3D modelling. Now, I work as a Graphic Artist in an iPhone game publisher. Previous to this, I did a short internship as a 3D artist. Although I only do a small amount of animating now, I am using all the 2D, 3D and production/post-production skills I learnt from the degree and applying them to the games I work on today. The course gave me the opportunity to be able to work in the job I wanted." The course has close links with local and national animation production companies and you will have the opportunity to work on live assignment briefs. Work placement opportunities can arise and industry representatives are invited to the end of year graduate showcase. Employers have outlined how important it is to focus on specialist techniques (with a fundamental understanding of traditional techniques) to communicate an understanding of timing, weight and emotion and provide graduates equipped to adapt to the rapidly changing digital industry. The course team have written the curriculum based on this consultation.
After the course
Depending on your individual areas of specialism, you will be equipped to work in the areas of digital animation, film and TV, post-production and interactive media. Recent graduates have started their careers in a variety of areas of the industry including; film and TV runners, freelance animation for industry and art organisations, storyboarding and pre-production/conceptual art, animation for games, visuals for music videos and independent film companies. Graduates from this course have been nominated for two recent Regional Royal Television Society awards (2009 and 2010). As well as nominations for the regional North West RTS awards in 2009 and 2010, Alfonso Romano won the regional award in 2011.

Personal Statement

UCAS Personal Statement

Currently I am studying games development at college; on this course I have covered units such as 3D modelling, digital graphics for computer games, games platforms and technologies and sound for computer games.
At university I would like to study 3D games development at a degree level so I can expand my skills and knowledge on the subject and be able to be prepared for employment with the skills I would have learnt. I would one day like to work for a gaming company to help to create games, perhaps focusing on the 3D model aspect or animation.
On my current course, the unit that particularly stands out to me and that I enjoy the most is 3D modelling, I enjoy this unit most as it Is the most appealing to me as it is helping me to develop my skills on a subject I am most interesting and that will benefit me the most in my career path.
While in college I have developed skills in time management, planning and I have gained familiarity with different 3D software and how to use these programmes to a good standard. Coming onto this course I had limited experience on these subjects but having progressed through the course I have improved them greatly and I believe I can produce various types of work to a high standard.
I have very limited work experience, throughout my life I have only ever had a paper round at a younger age and I participated in one day of work experience at my previous college working in the IT department.
Outside of college I have many interests in things like music, mainly metal and hard-core, I have a great interest in gaming, I play mainly Xbox 360 games currently and I also play PC games such as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. My other interest include movies, attending gigs and music festivals, spending time with family, friends and my girlfriend and in many different television programs.

I think I would be suitable for university as I am willing to commit to a course so I can seek employment so I will be very hardworking and dedicated. I can create high quality pieces of work and I can complete them on time and I am willing to give up a great deal of my free time to completing work to ensure I receive a high grade.

Portfolio

Featured below is a portfolio of my main accomplishments in my first year of studying Level 3 Game design.

Unit 78: Digital Graphics for Computer Games, HA3 - Transformation - This is my final outcome for my HA3 Transformation assignment, I created this illustration using Adobe Illustrator, and it evolved from a draft illustration and is based on an image of myself.

Unit 66: 3D Modelling, HA5 - Sidekick - This is a model of a robot sidekick that I created using for my HA5 Sidekick assignment  LightWave Modeller. I created this model based on my own pre-production and a design pack I created myself.

Below is a mixture of sound recordings, manipulations, effects and soundtracks, all of which were created as part of my Unit 73 IG1 and Unit 73 IG2 Assignment. I created all of these sounds using the Reaper sound manipulating program.

Strengths and Weaknesses for work in portfolio:

 Strengths:

  • I have manged to become familiar with Illustrators tools n a short amount of time and I have been able to create a final illustration that I am satisfied with.
  • I have developed new skills in LightWave Modeller and LightWave Layout.
  • Using LightWave Modeller and Layout I have been able to created an appealing Sidekick Robot model using the skills I have learnt, and with my practice and time, I could easily create a more detailed and complicated series of models.
  • Using Reaper, I have been able to created a vast amount of different sound effects to a reasonable quality.
  • I have developed skills and both sound recording and manipulation.

Weaknesses:
I have few weaknesses aside from my limited ability and skill as I have not had very much practice so far as assignments are quite short and we move on to new assignments very quickly that involve a more theoretical side.

HA1 - The Structure of the Game Guide

Task 6

Contractual, Legal, Ethical and Professional, what they mean:

Contractual

Employment
Contractual employment is a contract in which an employee agrees to in order for them to be accepted as an employee either permanently or for a short, contracted period, perhaps for throughout the production of a video game. Contractual employment lays on top of set rules and guidelines and often deadlines, an employees contract will include working hours and their set role in a business and what is expected of them to produce in a business.

Development
Contractual development is a business's contractual agreement to complete a project in a business to a specific standard and includes everything that they must cover, both legally and ethically and in order for the project to be complete. The development has to be completed in order for a project to be finalized, for example a game must be completed to contracted standards, before it can be released to make money from sales.

License
The license holds permission to use things like branding and near identical relevance to a well know franchise or project, this license is needed to make any reference to a franchise and has set rules and guidance in the contract, stating what needs to be done to keep a project relevant to a franchise and what exactly can be used from the franchise.

NDA
An NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) is critical for protecting the most valuable intellectual property of many technology, software and Internet companies. And NDA protects your idea and contains details of what exactly your idea involves.

Collaboration
An agreement between two or more researchers that sets forth the nature of their working relationship in a research project. The agreement may include provisions concerning the intent of the parties to share data, research materials and facilities, and to publish research findings. Since collaboration agreements are usually executed between researchers, they are not documents that legally bind the researchers' institutions to a commitment of any resources.

Legal

Copyright
Copyright is a form of protection provided by the law  to the authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. The owner of copyright has the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

  • To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords
  • To prepare derivative works based upon the work
  • To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending
  • To perform the work publicly
  • To display the copyrighted work publicly
Trademark
A trademark is a symbol, word, or words legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product. If you see a trademark on a product, it means all rights of that product belong to the company that created it.

Patent
The exclusive property rights to an invention which permit the owner the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention.

Registered Designs
This legislation assists in the protection of the overall appearance of a product resulting from one or more visual features of the product.

Ethics
Ethics consist of the different levels of violence, the rating, the educational value, stereotyping and addiction in a product such as a video game. Each is an important factor and is rated by different professional bodies in order to make sue only suitable audience play the game that has been rated and that they are aware of what the game contains.

http://legitreviews.com/images/reviews/news/PEGI_Rating_Criteria.jpg

Professional Bodies
In products such as games there are professional bodies that are responsible for the rating of games, these professional bodies have their opinion on a game and they can decide whether what is featured in the game is acceptable and can be featured in the final product and what consumers should be aware of that the game features, before purchasing the game. Some professional bodies such as BAFTA, exist to rate a product after it is complete and sent to retailers and award it according to its success. Examples of professional bodies are:

  • UKIE - Ukie is the only trade body for the UK’s wider interactive entertainment industry. They exist to champion the interests, needs and positive image of video games and interactive entertainment industry who's companies make up their membership
